Great Allegheny Passage Trail Saturday, Aug 29Aug 30 - Aug 31 - Sep 1 - Sep 2 - Sep 3 - Sep 4 - Sep 5 - Sep 6 - Sep 7 - Sep 8 - Sep 9 - Home |
Note: These "trail reports" are daily accounts that I sent to my brothers and sisters while on the trip. We are cousins of George Rogers and William Clark. Drove from Charleston, IL to Pittsburgh and stopped for lunch at a rest stop east of Indy near Greenfield. Stopped at George Rogers Clark State Park, Springfield, OH - Birthplace of Tecumseh. Talked to a volunteer for too long about the Battle of Piqua. Ended up driving in dark for last 100 miles - mountain roads into Pittsburgh. Wished I had not stayed in the park so long. Arrived at Pittsburgh and couldn't find the entrance to the parking garage, even after several tries of circling the block (I think). Poor lighting and signage lacking. Chose to use hotel valet parking. Great idea. Allowed me to unload everything so I can sort it out in the room before packing up on Monday. Today's lesson: Talk about Clark too long, and you'll end up driving in the dark. Monument at GRC State Park, Springfield, OH
Figure of George Rogers Clark atop the monument
Inscription on the monument. On the backside, an inscription notes that the famed Shawnee leader, Tecumseh, was born at this site.
Historic plaque noting the birthplace of Tecumseh. For detail and text, see https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=35123
View from my window of my hotel room in Pittsburgh - Point State Park, the confluence of three rivers. Monongahela on the left, Allegheny on the right, and the Ohio flowing westward. The outline in the grass in the foreground is the footprint of Fort Pitt (British fort), and on the point, you can see the footprint of Fort Duquesne (French).
