Introduction
Our itinterary started at the Dublin Airport, with overnight stays in these places:
Slane
Donegal
Derry
Carrickfergus
Carlingford
Dublin (near airport)
Since much of our travel would be in Northern Ireland, we considered taking time in Derry or Belfast to learn more about The Troubles, a turbulent time in Irish history. Neither of us is very keen on spending much time in large cities because we have done our share of that and don't find it very restful. Instead, though our plans covered a lot of miles, we focused more on being outdoors and staying in inns with local flavor.
We booked tickets on Aer Lingus for a flight in early March - not especially the best time to see Ireland if you're hoping for warm weather, but an ideal time if you're looking for affordable air fares. We reserved a rental car from Budget Rent-a-Car for 8 days and made advance reservations for lodging in each of our overnight spots.
The plaque reads, "In 1721 nothing happened here."
